 Course Description
  • studio based course that examines traditional and alternative book structures in relationship to conceptually developed content
  • course presents an overview of methods used in making handmade books
  • demonstrations and discussions will introduce students to various book formats, adhesive and sewn binding structures, archival concerns and methods for generating original images and text.
  • the projects will explore the interdependent relationships between form, materials and content

Course Outline
we have ten hours to work!
  • there will be four book projects (four-two hour intensive workshops) to be completed as well as several structural and content sketches required
  • lastly students will choose, develop and complete one book format/structure inclusive individual content/narrative for exhibition

  • scalpel or cutter
  • cutting mat
  • *glue brushes
  • *paper, book cloth and binding board (purchase as you develop projects)
  • metal ruler
  • triangle
  • binder clips
  • *sewing needle and thread
